There are few better feelings than your first taste of freedom on two wheels. If you or your teenager is turning 17, you have probably already started wondering what you are actually allowed to ride, and how you go about getting on the road. Here is the to the point version, so you know exactly where to start.
At 17: Getting on a 125
Once you turn 17, the door opens to a 125cc motorcycle, a proper experience of freedom, capability and array of choice. This is where things get genuinely exciting, and where a lot of riders find the bike they fall in love with.

The first step is always your CBT
CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training, and despite the official-sounding name it is a friendly, practical day designed to get you riding safely rather than a pass-or-fail exam. You will cover the basics off-road first, then head out on the road with an instructor. Complete it and you get a certificate that lasts two years.

Full licence or L plates?
You have two paths. You can keep riding on L plates with a valid CBT, or you can go on to take your theory and practical tests for a full licence in the relevant category, which lifts the L plate restrictions. Plenty of riders start on L plates and take their full test once they have some miles and confidence under their belt.
